Redrafting The 2020 MLB Draft

Plus: 2020 draft winners and losers & dynasty pitcher rankings

Spencer Strider, Garrett Crochet Top 2020 Redraft

Spencer Strider… in a Tigers jersey? That’s right, today we’re redrafting the 2020 draft with five years of hindsight to guide us. Because who doesn’t love a little alternate history?

As is the case with every draft, it’s difficult to know who “won” and who “lost” on draft day. That’s especially the case for a 2020 class that saw its draft year interrupted by the covid pandemic. At the time, scouts and talent evaluators weren’t quite sure how to handle the player class and shortened five-round draft. Looking back in time, it’s even clearer that some better decisions could have been made.

So, how does Carlos Collazo see the 2020 draft playing out if they had to do it all over again?

2020 MLB Draft Winners And Losers

While one might convincingly argue the true losers of the pandemic-shorted 2020 draft cycle were all fans, scouts, teams and the game of baseball in general, a few clear winners and losers have emerged over the past five years.

Highlights from Carlos Collazo’s deep-dive analysis of all 30 draft classes include:

  • An NL Central class buoyed by the selection of a player who, at the time, was described as “Pound for pound … the most purely-talented player in the 2020 class.”

  • Another NL Central team that hit on big leaguers with each of their first three selections.

  • An AL Central club that, despite landing a trio of eventual major leaguers, also managed the most high-profile miss of the draft.

We’re wrapping up our first go at dynasty positional rankings for 2025 with look at starting pitchers and relievers.

Unsurprisingly, Paul Skenes, who burst onto the major league scene as a bona fide star in 2024 by going 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts en route to claiming BA’s Rookie of the Year award, heads up our ranking of the top 150 SP/RP options for next year.
