Cubs Prospect Matt Shaw Tops This Week’s Hot Sheet
Cubs prospect Matt Shaw continued his torrid pace with Triple-A Iowa to claim the lead off spot in this week’s Hot Sheet rundown of the 20 hottest prospects in baseball.
The 22-year-old infielder strung together five multi-hit efforts last week, including a four-hit game in the finale of Iowa’s postseason series against Louisville. After homering in three different contests and reaching base in all six games, Shaw improved his slash line to .296/.382/.565 with seven home runs across 29 Triple-A games. The top hitting prospect in the Cubs system looks like a likely contributor for the big league team next season and has a great opportunity to break camp with the club.
Joining Shaw on this week’s Hot Sheet is a number of other worthy candidates. Highlights include:
Sebastian Walcott doing some mighty impressive things at just 18
Travis Sykora holding his own with the other Nats’ top prospects
Bubba Chandler continuing to shove for the Pirates
A pair of arms acquired at the deadline making excellent impressions
JJ Wetherholt simply refusing to stop hitting
A Double-A Mets catcher ending a disappointing season on a high note

15 Young Stars Who Could Shape The Postseason
Every postseason offers the chance for a young player to have a breakout performance on baseball’s biggest stage.
Some use the spotlight to announce their arrival earlier than expected, such as Andruw Jones in 1996, Francisco Rodriguez in 2002 and Evan Carter in 2023. Others, such as Miguel Cabrera in 2003 and Dustin Pedroia in 2007, continue building on their path to stardom.
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, Brendan Tuma offers up a profile of the current crop of youngsters we could see make a name for themselves come October.
