Ranking The 20 Hottest MLB Prospects

Cam Smith turned in a week for the ages.

The Cubs’ first-round pick out of Florida State homered in all six games of a series at Charleston, putting on a power display that included eight balls in play at 95+ mph, five of which went for homers. Smith’s week was so good, the Cubs promoted him to High-A South Bend on Sunday evening.

As such, the No. 14 pick in the draft was a no-doubter to headline this week’s Hot Sheet. But the Cubs farmhand is far from the only interesting standout over the last week. Check out the latest Hot Sheet below, which includes…

  • An under-the-radar Pirates arm

  • Roman Anthony’s torrid Triple-A performance

  • Two of the best pitchers in the minors this season

  • Cam Collier’s epic tear

  • Yet another sleeper 1B in the Guardians system

WATCH TODAY’S HOT SHEET SHOW!

Marcelo Mayer will likely miss the rest of the 2024 season with a lumbar strain. How does that impact his outlook moving forward for the Red Sox? Today’s Hot Sheet show dives in, plus examines five players we hope to see reach the majors in September, plus a look ahead to the 2025 draft with Carlos Collazo.

‘BEST TOOLS’ OFTEN FORESHADOWS SUCCESS

Is Jaison Chourio Better Than We Realize?

Two years ago, Jackson Chourio rose to prominence as a prospect and won two key categories in our annual Best Tools balloting: Best Batting Prospect and Most Exciting Player in the Low-A Carolina League.

Fast-forward two seasons and the 20-year-old Chourio is coming on strong in the second half of his rookie season. The Brewers outfielder is up to a .273/.320/.440 line with 15 homers, 18 steals and 2.8 fWAR through 117 games.

Yes, there’s another Chourio coming, too.

His younger brother, Guardians outfielder Jaison Chourio, won the same categories in this year’s Best Tools balloting. He also won two more for good measure: Best Strike Zone Judgment and Best Defensive Outfielder.

Winning multiple categories in this annual exercise is often an indicator good things are coming, especially for prospects who win either Best Batting Prospect or Most Exciting Player.

Matt Eddy dives into 2024 winners and compares them to past vote-getters. For example, Jaison now finds himself in the same company as Andruw Jones, Adrian Beltre, Mike Trout and others. Not a bad group.

Baseball America subscribers can see breakdowns at each level below, including fresh looks at top names like James Wood, Carson Williams & more. You can also order our annual Best Tools print issue here.
